WEST MARIN RESIDENCE

I designed this home for my family in the San Geronimo Valley.  Shared interior spaces mirror an incomplete courtyard to form a singular indoor/outdoor space that centers the home.  This space is anchored against the steep hills, towering trees, and seasonal creek that bisects the property by a continuous board-formed concrete wall.

In addition to designing this home, I also built it.  The construction process gave me the opportunity to build details Iā€™d been drawing for years, and the freedom to experiment with different materials and methods before implementing them on my other projects.  The monumental barn doors, for example, were developed on the home and later used on a Montessori school project.  I built concrete foundations back East over the summers when I was in college, and my love for all things concrete came out in the board-formed walls and the 500 or so pavers I cast for the walkways and courtyard.  The construction process had its share of trial and error, and much gratitude is due to my wife and children for hanging in there while I experimented.
